Wetland construction projects are being implemented in order to reduce the degradation of wetlands and their ecosystem services. Because wetlands are bat habitats, short-term studies (one or two years) show that constructed wetlands can increase bat activity and diversity. However, it is not clear how the bats will behave over time as the wetland matures. We collected four years of continuous monitoring of bat vocalizations in two constructed wetlands in a city park in Greensboro, NC, USA. We studied bat movement and community composition patterns in these wetlands and compared them to urban reference sites. With four years of data, we found that wetland impacts were both habitat-specific and species-specific. Forested wetlands significantly increased bat movement, while open grassland wetlands changed bat composition. Specifically, at the species level, we found that constructed wetlands over time no longer attracted more brown, silver-haired, or dusky bats than the sites they manage as the land matures, pointing to the need to study more broadly how individual species use natural resources. and artificial wetlands.
