There are 15 GS grades, making up the annual salary from 15 (lowest) to 15 (highest). Each job category is established by the employing organization based on difficulty, responsibility and qualifications required. In general, people will qualify in the GS degree along these general lines:

Most federal employees under the General Schedule are entitled to local GS pay, which is a geographically based rate that reflects the pay level for non-federal workers in a specific geographic area. This salary level is in the US. are determined by surveys conducted by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The BLS measures non-federal labor market compensation and compares it to federal wages for GS employees doing similar work in the same geographic area.

Each GS grade has 10 steps (steps 1-10), and employees can advance to higher steps throughout their federal career. Grade Increments (WGIs), as they are called, are based on an acceptable level of performance and longevity (1 year waiting period on steps 1-3, 2 years on steps 4-6, and 3 years on steps 7-9).

Each WGI amounts to a salary increase of about 3% of the employee’s salary. In effect, WGI is an increase based on length of government service at a particular stage and grade in the General Schedule pay system.

This is consistent with his earlier salary adjustment (alternative plan) for civilian federal employees because “a national emergency or dire economic situation affects the general welfare.”

Specifically, I determined that for 2023, the total base pay increase would be 4.1% and the local pay increase would average 0.5%, resulting in an overall average increase of 4.6% for civilian federal employees. This alternative pay plan decision will allow the federal government to better compete in the labor market to attract and retain a well-qualified federal workforce in light of the growing challenges in recruiting and retaining employees… that have created significant wage differentials for federal employees. the private sector. I will update this article as news and forecasts become available on the GS Pay increase for 2024. With inflation easing at this point, I expect 2024 growth to be around 2%.

Following President Biden’s executive order and the passage of the 2023 omnibus bill, the GS wage increase is now finalized. Official tables are issued by the Office of Personnel Management (OPM), including the pay tables for 55 positions linked below. The average local salary increase is 0.5%, but varies by geographic region.

Federal employees on the GS pay scale received an overall base pay increase of 2.2% for 2022, with an additional local pay adjustment of 0.5%, for an overall average increase of 2.7%.

These changes took effect on January 1, 2022. This increase is twice the increase in the average salary in 2021, reflecting the higher cost of living.

See below for the 2022 GS Basic Pay Scale Table Step and Grade, which reflects the 2.2% Basic Pay Adjustment. Local wage adjustments (0.5%) may vary by locality and can be found on the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) website.

Federal Pay Scale 2023 (government Gs Pay Scale)

Despite a potential pay freeze for federal employees in 2021, Congress approved a 1 percent raise for federal employees on the GS pay scale. This was not good news in an environment where inflation was rising and members of the armed forces in particular saw a 3% increase in their military pay for 2021.

You can check GS Pay Chart 2021 phase wise and grade wise below. All changes came into effect on January 1, 2021.

[November 2020 Update] President Trump has proposed a 1% GS wage increase for 2021, but with a poor economy and low inflation, many expect even smaller increases or possibly no increases at all. Details should be announced over the next few months, but those expecting a pay rise may be wise to temper expectations at this stage.

For 2020, there will be a 3.1% increase for civil servants in the GS pay scale compared to 2019. This consists of a 2.6% overall schedule increase (shown in the table below) and 0, 5% local wage adjustment. Army Pay Scale 2020 has seen the same increase. The updated pay schemes are effective from 1 January 2020.

Biden Plans 5.2% Pay Raise For Federal Employees

President Trump approved a 1.4 percent pay raise for 2018 for 1.5 million state employees on the GS pay scale in his first year in office. In addition, a 0.5% local wage adjustment is being made to bring the total wage increase to 1.9% for 2018, compared to a 2.4% increase for military personnel. The updated GS Pay Scale Table 2018 is shown below:

The GS pay increase was outlined by executive order, and full details and local details are available on the OPM site. At this point, wage growth in 2019 is expected to be similar to 2018.

In a surprise move, President Obama withdrew his previous proposal from August 2016 for a 1.6% wage increase.

. In his latest executive order, he proposed a “revised” alternative total wage increase for 2017 of 2.1%. This still consists of a 1% overall increase, but will now reflect a local wage adjustment of 1.1%. That would bring the total average wage increase for 2017 to 2.1% (not including raises).

Gs Pay Scale

The revised plan was issued to improve the economic climate, which saw a 2.1 percent increase in 2017 for military personnel and a large increase in wages in the private sector. While Congress and the new administration could repeal this in 2017, it is unlikely to happen until this late, as all wage increases took effect on January 1, 2017.

The table below shows the 2017 GS salary table/chart by step and grade representing a total federal/national increase of 1%. The updated local wage adjustment of 1.2% varies by state and I encourage you to review OPM’s chart for specific details. Members of the military in uniform will also receive a 2.1 percent increase in monthly basic pay, as shown in the latest 2017 military pay chart.
